Needing Help.

My family want to get a few things for us for our little China Bear. The funny thing is....I have no idea what to even get for him. Hope this doesn't make me a bad parent already. LOL. I just don't know about sizes to even suggest to get or what he will need for the house. For example does a toddler need a high chair? I just think that we need to start on a few of the bigger things so it's not a huge expense later. If anyone one out there could help me out I would be totally greatful! Thanks!

Booster seats are good, books are fantastic :) Furniture...he'll always need a bed, dresser, etc...

My little girl refuses to sit in the stroller (she's 2.5) so depending on the age there....

And outside toys rock too, little tikes cars, swing sets, sand boxes too.

It's so hard to plan things if you're not sure on the age of your wee one!

Forgot the big one....car seats!! Make sure they are big enough, because we've already had to buy a different one to accomodate E's height!

Kelly, I'll email you, because I have quite a few! :)

2 notes on the carseat:

1) get a car seat for each vehicle. Not kidding. Makes life so much easier!

2) never, EVER get a used carseat. They are worthless if they've been in an accident when vehicle was going more than 15 km/hr. That's fender bender speed. :)

Off to email you now! :)

One tip from our experience - you might want to hold off on buying a stroller. Yes, you will probably want/need one in China but they're very cheap to buy there and take home. We had already bought one at home and also bought one there, and received one as a gift so we ended up with 3 strollers! Another item we really loved was our Ergo baby carrier, depending on how little your darlin will be. Convenient and soooo helpful to attachment.

If he is a toddler,a hip hammock is a less restrictive type of carrier and good up to about 35 pounds. Some children do not like to be confined when they are getting used to new people and will fight a carrier. I ended up using a stroller most of the time and both of mine liked it although the hip hammock was useful in certain places. Strollers are also great pack mules at the airports. I agree that it is best to pick one up in China. The airlines prefer the unbrella type folding strollers if you are gatechecking them. We never used them at home much but for travelling, they are useful up to age four or even five depending on the size of the child. Susan

Landon is 18 months and just becoming interested in his big sand box trucks. Actually, anything that has wheels indoor or out is fantastic. If you have hardwood floors but want an indoor ride on for winter play check the catalogue from sears... They have something called a scuttlebug. Huge hit for play for landon and with the kids that come for play dates. :) Here we are already using a booster seat at the table and he's in a twin bed. (doesn't like the toddler bed at all) we only have one car seat for Landon but someone suggested one for each car, I agree that's a great idea and also... Don't buy a used one! :) We have a small Childs table and chair set in the kitchen for snack time and coloring etc. Not necessity but for us we don't have to worry about him falling off a big chair all the time. Baby gates if he's not used to stairs especially if he's on a ride on toy or running etc. hmm... Oh.. Tub books. For us it's necessity you can find them at any chapters. Just a thought and it's not for home but more for first meeting. When we met Oksana the first thingwe gave her was a musical bee. With the language barrier I can defiantly say it helped break the ice and gave her something to focus on rather than the awkward situation with strange people. Even now it's her favorite and most loved. The ki d where you push it's tummy. You can make one at build a bear stores and have your own voice added with whatever you want to say and it could be left with him if he spends any nights without you during bonding etc... a thought though :)
We are all so excited for you and so glad things are moving so quickly!!! Can't wait to keep checking up and reading more !!

I don't really have anything to add but just wanted to say how excited I am for you guys to be at this stage...planning and asking advice and dreaming of your little one. I still remember the first time you talked to me about China adoption (in Reitman's) more than 6 years ago. And now to think your time is just around the corner!!!!

Hi Kelly

What I learned about carseats:

Bought one that could be used as a booster seat.

If you have a Toy R US, they can help you with choosing. Also, they have a policy in which they will not accept returns on carseats. This is to ensure that someone who has purchased a carseat then is in an accident, cannot return the carseat. Our local Toy R US has someone who is trained to put the carseat in properly. After talking to the "expert" at Toys R US I would not purchase our carseats at another store.

Our firechief is trained in putting carseats in, he will not put in a carseat purchased in the US because it those carseats do not meet Canadian Safety standards.

Hope this is helpful.
